As a courier you may from time to time need the flexibility of a short term vehicle lease. However, many of the couriers we speak to have had problems obtaining insurance if they take the vehicle on a lease term of less than 12 months.
We spoke to the insurers and explained that our courier partners sometimes need to hire vehicles in this way, and they listened.
If you are adding these vehicles to a fleet policy, or if you need to cover it on an individual basis, we will try and find the right policy for your needs.
What if we need to change the driver on the vehicle?
If you need to change the driver on your short term lease courier fleet insurance policy you should have no problems provided the policy is set up in a company name. Some insurers would ask that the policy is cancelled and a new one taken up but this doesn’t always have obvious benefits to our clients. When needed, we can simply adjust the policy mid-term and change the driver of the vehicle.
What is courier fleet insurance?
Courier fleet insurance is essential for any courier business owner who has three or more vehicles. You could just insure each vehicle individually. However, this will most likely be far less cost effective than if you were to take out specialist courier fleet insurance. Here at Insurance Revolution, we offer short term leasing with insurance policies for your courier franchise.
What does courier fleet insurance cover you for?
Just like standard vehicle insurance, there are three types of courier fleet insurance available. The one you go for depends on the level of cover needed:
Third party courier fleet insurance
This is the minimum amount of courier fleet insurance that you can legally have. This type of insurance covers third parties in the event of an accident, but not you. So if one of your vans is stolen, you’ll have to pick up the costs yourself.
Third party, fire and theft courier fleet insurance
This is a lot like third party cover in the sense that if one of your vans is damaged in an accident, you’ll have to pick up the costs yourself. However, if one of your vans is damaged by fire or stolen, you’re covered.
What can affect the cost of your insurance premium?
Like most other types of vehicle insurance, there are a wide variety of factors that can affect your courier fleet insurance premiums. These include:
- The type of vehicles in your fleet. The larger the vehicle, the more attractive they will be for thieves, so the more expensive your insurance will be.
- How much driving experience your named drivers have.
- Where your vehicles will be stored when not in use. If they’re in a secure car park, you will most likely pay less than if they are parked in the street.
